You will need to add passport pages to your US passport if you fall under either of these two categories: (1) you have less than two to four pages left in your passport, or (2) you are a frequent traveler in need of a new passport book. Let’s discuss the first category first. If you are a passport holder, and your passport has less than two to four pages in it, you’ll need to request additional passport pages. But why request pages so soon? That’s because it will save you a lot of time when you do that now, rather than when you are already about to travel.

In this situation, you will have to fulfill two requirements: your passport must be valid, and you need to fill in Form DS-4085. This form is what you’ll need to fill in if you need to request additional passport pages. Once you have filled in the DS-4085, you can then mail it to the address indicated, along with your current US passport.

You don’t need to pay anything to request for additional passport pages. However, if you want to have the processing of your passport expedited, then you will have to pay for this kind of option. Keep in mind to clearly write on the envelope ‘Expedited’ to indicate what you want done with it. Also, expedited passports are only allowed to those who need to leave the US in two weeks, or those who need the passport in four weeks for their foreign visa application.

How about if you are a frequent traveler? Then you’re likely to fill in your passport pages faster than most travelers. If that is the case, you will have to request for a new passport book altogether. You’ll need to do this as soon as your passport runs out of pages.

You need to follow a different procedure in this case.  If you are a frequent traveler, you need to send a signed letter requesting additional passport pages. Aside from that, you will also have to mail the completed DS-82 form along with your letter. This form will allow you to apply for a passport by mail.  However, in case you are not eligible for applications by mail, you can instead fill in the Form DS-11, and then personally submit this with your letter at the passport office.

When sending your passport application by mail, it is recommended that you send it using a delivery method that can be traced. All modern courier services offer this type of service already. Also remember to place your documents in a tough envelope to prevent it from getting damaged easily when mailed.
