In order to do a renew us passport by mail, you must comply with a few simple requirements and your existing passport must be unmarred. Basically, the previous passport must have been issued when you were at least age fifteen. The existing passport must not more than fifteen years old. You must not have had a name change in the period since your passport was issued.

A passport card application can also be submitted by mail. It must be the first time you have applied for a passport card by mail and you must have complied with all the requirements for a mail-in passport. Be sure to use a sturdy mailing envelope and to mail the documents in a way that allows them to be traced. Don’t expect to have your passport renewed if you have fallen behind in child support payments.

A lost, damaged or stolen passport can’t be renewed through the mail. It must be done in person. You will need to complete an application except for the signature blank which will be done in the presence of the passport agent. Your social security card must be presented for proof of identity.

The next step in the application process is to prove your citizenship. You can do this through many different means. One of the easiest is with a previous passport; if this is not available, a certified birth certificate will do. A naturalization certificate or a certificate of citizenship is also a way of proving your citizenship status.

You will need to provide forms of personal identification. This identification can be a current driver’s license, a current military ID, a government ID, a naturalization certificate or an undamaged passport. When you don’t have a primary form of ID, there are some secondary forms of ID that are acceptable. These require someone with ID to vouch for you.

Identification documentation needs to be prepared in a specific defined format. Each document must be photocopied on a single page of standard letter size white paper on one side only. You can enlarge the size of the print, but you cannot shrink the size of the copy to less than actual size.

You must submit the correct fees along with the application. The fees may be split into two different payments, one to the agent and one to purchase the passport renewal. Some agents will only accept money orders for the exact amount. If you purchase additional services, such as expedited delivery or overnight service, you must include the appropriate fees for the additional services. You can pay by credit card, money order or checks in most cases. Personal checks may need to clear before the passport is issued.

To finish your renew passports, you must also enclose a 2-inch by 2-inch color photo. It must be a full face with no head gear and must be a frontal view. The background must be either off white or white. The photo for your U.S. passports cannot be older than six months. When you normally wear glasses, you need to wear glasses in the picture. The same goes for hearing aids, a wig or a hairpiece. You cannot wear tinted glasses unless you have a medical certificate stating that you need them.
