Trip To Antarctica First Time For The Power Packed Team

It must have seemed an especially warm homecoming after 18 days in the icy ground of Antarctica. There were four members of the expedition to the Antarctic returned home to receive a hero’s welcome after nearly three weeks to walk the bottom part of the Earth. For this reason, it was an extraordinary event and emotional and worthy record of history.

A homecoming celebration was prepared when the arrival day of Antarctica’s scientific expedition finally came after the unwanted weather restricted them for about 10 additional days. Relatives and acquaintance sat in black plastic airport chairs peering out the large windows on the runway and glimpsing at their watches about an hour earlier as the plane was about to land. Along the hall, 25 students draw together with teachers and parents, nibbling turkey sandwiches and were about to coddle their instructors with hugs. The welcome troops brought a bouquet of heart shaped balloons, a dozen roses and a stack of handmade welcome signs bearing pictures of penguins. The four expedition members carried two bags of meteorites which will later be photographed, cut open and tested and shared their experience about their accomplished mission. The Antarctic journey also included two expert astronauts who worked at NASA before, a scientist from NASA and a resident of Chicago who played an important role significantly in funding part of the expedition. The journey took the team to Antarctica’s Patriot Hills, South Pole and Thiel Mountains even though it is not so high as the Rockies, but just as spectacular.

Back in the States, there was a team member who complained about the technology they had along the way. In no way did the satellite phones function well. It served to be a reflection of what they could not bring along. Much earlier than expected he will regain a position as a professor of astronomy and geology in a populated continent.

Antarctica 2000 wasn’t the first time these colleagues ventured into unfamiliar territory. Accompanied by their scientific team in Turkey last summer for the solar eclipse two of them were able to view this from the coast of the Black Sea. The same thing happened over there like the unexpected extra days they had when they were in Antarctica. A very strong earthquake led to them staying even longer than the initial plan of staying for the eclipse. Being 200 miles away from its epicenter when the earthquake struck caused the two to only be jolted by a magnitude of 5.5.You will gain a deeper understanding about cruises to antartica by checking out that resource.

The best part of the Antarctica trip for him was the camaraderie apart from the blue ice fields and the snow covered scenery which was far less terrifying. For the team which had a retired NASA scientist it was somewhat an exclusive club. Not only were they easy to talk to but they were actually down to earth. Much fun and zero egos is what they believed in. During their unexpected and expected days in the Antarctic they engaged in much reading, talking, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing.

Apart from boots and goggles not to mention heavy gloves there was a 24 year old team member a month ago who also said to reporters and staff members that she will also be wearing an energetic smile for the trip. She wore a cheerful smile upon returning with some sneakers, jeans, and a sweatshirt. Because she incorporated space science in her classes, she was chosen for this Mars like continent. For the students, it was a rare learning experience. For learning to happen, everything should be tied in. Kids are exposed to science and history with an explorer for a teacher.

On this trip, she experimented on gravity, temperature, and rocks, same as what was being done by students back home. Data were transmitted to students from 11 classrooms via satellite phone and email. From the questions to the answers, all were rather side splitting. What was funny was how the answers were so different. Her experience taught the students that data can be a little different when performed in a snowy desert with temperatures plunging to well below zero.
