Do Other Lands Celebrate Retiring?
The perception of retirement, along with retirement gifts, is usually different from culture to culture that you would think might be similar. Japanese customs dictate that a company party be provided honoring the retiree, with small gifts given by each and every coworker. In some African countries they give more unique gifts, many times it is even created by the giver, which is viewed as the regard held for the person’s own successes.
These days, everything has changed enough so that we really do not think of retirement to mean the end of a life, as well as the indicator of a fading future. Today we do not give them a rocking chair and slippers and expect someone that is enthusiastic about life to suddenly stop enjoying living. We’re not still doing the clichéd watch from the company in addition to a funny collective gift from the “work mates.” We have been now happily imagining there’s far more to life after retirement in comparison with doing the gardening, however we should also tread the fine line of not looking to make the retiree come to feel useless. Yet another thing we should try to avoid is pushing our hobbies on to the retiree with gifts that we’d want to get, sports equipment for a sport they’ve never shown interest in, or a kit for a hobby they know almost nothing about. That borders on being pushy, doctorial and rude.
Hitting the proper note of friendship, respect and deference is difficult with retirement gifts. While it’s an extremely risky venture, art is a great idea for a respected retiree, but taste is a very subjective point, and you just don’t want your gift thrown in a closet. Determining what a coworker wants is not easy, however good art at its best is useful plus a talking piece. A great idea should be to take a favorite picture of theirs, family photo or else, and transferring it onto something helpful. There is a medium you have most likely never thought of that adds artistic merit and personal flair, not to mention creating a wonderful retirement gift. Add a bit of class and elegance due to custom etched mirors that may be etched with images of family and friends or pets, and even natural scenery, and incorporated with furniture or stand alone as discussion starters. Custom etched glass isn’t something which costs a tremendous amount of money, and it would make a statement that you just care about their personal tastes and passions, without sending the message that you just think their life as they understand it is over.
As far as retirement gifts go, it’s, when it is original and personal and it has a personal value, anyone receiving it will surly be very grateful.
